Notre Dame’s Mike Elston Makes Strong First Impression On DE Tyson Ford

St. Louis John Burroughs School class of 2022 defensive end Tyson Ford’s recruitment has blown up in the past few weeks.

Since March 27, the 6-6, 215-pounder has picked up scholarship offers from Arizona State, Arkansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Texas A&M and Washington. Ford has 10 offers total, and the schools listed here represent eight of his scholarships.

“I knew I put the work in last season and knew what I expected to come from out of it,” Ford said. “I didn’t expect it to come this early, but I thought it would at some point.”

Ford added Notre Dame to his rapidly expanding offer list on April 18.

Ford’s new offer from Notre Dame that he received Saturday came a bit out of the blue. He was being invited to campus by the Irish staff, but he hadn’t had any direct communication with defensive line coach Mike Elston. But that changed after Ford called up Elston and received the scholarship offer over the phone.

“He said that he loves how I play and loves my academics,” Ford said. “He talked about how I’m a hard worker and gave me an offer to his school.”

Elston also noted to Ford that he would like for the sophomore pass rusher to get on a call with Irish head coach Brian Kelly and defensive coordinator Clark Lea this week as well.

“He seems like a good guy,” Ford said of Elston. “He knows what kind of people he wants in his program, and I fit into that category. It was good talking to him.”

Ford isn’t too familiar with the Fighting Irish just yet. He knows more about Notre Dame’s academics than anything, which has to be an encouraging sign for Kelly’s program.

Additionally, Ford is good friends with Notre Dame class of 2021 defensive tackle pledge Gabriel Rubio, another standout prospect in the St. Louis area. They played youth football together as young kids, and Ford knows the Rubio family well.

“He’s in the grade above me; I’ve been pretty tight with him for a long time,” Ford said. “I talked to him about it, and he told me how Notre Dame is a great place and wants to introduce me to all the people there. He knows I’m going to like it when I go visit.”

Ford was named to the Metro League 2019 football all-conference first-team defense.
