Notre Dame Scholarship Offer ‘Would Mean The World’ To Two 2023 QB Recruits

Notre Dame has offered three scholarships to quarterbacks in the class of 2023. Two others would be elated to add their names to the list.

Four-star Marco Lainez of Princeton (N.J.) Hun School and unranked Christopher Vizzina of Birmingham (Ala.) Briarwood Christian each threw for Notre Dame quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator Tommy Rees in recent weeks.

They loved the experience.

“Coach Rees was giving us really good pointers,” Lainez said. “He was teaching us a few of his pass combinations, reads and footwork tips. He’s a very young guy which I really like, and he’s very personable and relatable. I like that in a coach.”

“The camp was very fun,” Vizzina said. “It was only about two hours long but was still very worth the trip from Alabama up there. I got top tier coaching from Coach Rees. I enjoyed every second of the whole trip. I personally thought I did very well.”

The quarterbacks threw passes in individual drills, to wide receivers running routes without defensive coverage and in one-on-ones. Like Vizzina, Lainez said he thought he performed admirably.

The next step for the duo is the waiting game. Lainez, who threw for Rees on June 8 along with three other 2023 quarterback recruits, said Rees told him he would take the rest of the month to evaluate the prospects’ film before getting back to them. Vizzina's Notre Dame camp experience was on June 17.

The rest of the quarterbacks, of which there have been upward of a dozen, are all in the same boat as Lainez and Vizzina; waiting for a recruitment-changing scholarship offer from Notre Dame.

“It would mean the world,” Lainez said. “Notre Dame is a prestigious university with a great history. Playing for them would be a blessing.”

“I know they are really interested in me,” Vizzina added. “They really like my tape and now have seen me in person. I’m extremely interested in them too. I think they’ll make some decisions soon.”

Vizzina has already visited Alabama, Clemson, Duke, Wake Forest, Georgia, Mississippi State and now Notre Dame. Michigan State and Mississippi State are among his most intriguing offers.

Lainez has also been offered by Michigan State as well as Iowa, Illinois, Pitt and others.

Vizzina also enjoyed being coached by Rees as well as running backs coach Lance Taylor.

“Both Coaches pushed me to be my best and improve,” Vizzina said. “I really liked them a lot. Coach Rees is young and extremely easy to connect with. All the coaches showed me a lot of love. Notre Dame is a very special place.”
