Mike Elston has had two stints as the defensive line coach at Notre Dame. His unit helped fuel the team’s 2012 run to the BCS Championship game, but the last two seasons have seen the Irish defensive line take its game to a whole new level.
The reason that is true is that Elston inherited a line that was arguably the most in Notre Dame history, at least from a production standpoint. Notre Dame couldn’t pressure the quarterback with its front in 2016, and it wasn’t much better at shutting down the run, either.
Enter Elston, who helped get things back on track immediately in 2017, but the 2018 unit went to a whole new level.
