2020 PG Dominiq Excited To See Notre Dame This Fall
Notre Dame will host one of its top targets in the 2018 class next weekend for the Georgia game when Northfield (Mass.) Mt. Hermon Rivals100 forward Nate Laszewski makes his third trip to South Bend.
But this fall will also allow the Irish staff to make early movements for the junior and sophomore classes welcoming prospects they have their eyes on early for visits.
One such player who will make the trip to Notre Dame is Dublin (Ohio) Coffman 2020 point guard Dominiq Penn, who will visit Oct. 21 during the weekend of the USC football game. Coffman is the home of former Irish point guard Chris Quinn.
“Notre Dame has been contacting my coach a lot and they’re coming down to see me workout and play,” Penn told Blue & Gold Illustrated. “Chris Quinn went to my school and my coach and my dad are very close with him.
“It’s great knowing that they’re showing interest in me especially knowing Chris Quinn, who went there. I like Coach [Mike] Brey and how he plays and handles his point guards.
Given his status as a sophomore, contact from the Irish Is going through Penn’s coach. The 5-foot-11, 170-pounder is excited to see Brey’s program in person.
“I would like to see the facilities, meet some of the basketball players and get to know the coaches pretty well because I believe it’s important in the recruiting process,” Penn explained. “[Notre Dame is a great school for education and for sports. Also, what stands out to me is all the accomplishments and success they’ve had. And the gold and blue.”
Penn hasn’t talked with Quinn about Notre Dame, but the former Irish point guard is sharing his thoughts on the program with Penn’s coach.
“He has been talking to my high school coach a lot about how it’s a great program for a guard and also that it could be a good fit for me,” Penn stated.
The sophomore has picked up early offers from Kent State, Duquesne and Stony Brook. Ohio State, Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Xavier and Louisville have also expressed interest In Penn along with Notre Dame.
“It feels great and it motivates me a whole lot,” Penn said of the early interest. “It’s my dream to play high major division one basketball … “I am looking for school that best fits me for basketball and education. The most important is feeling comfortable with the coaching staff and environment at the school.”
Basketball is in Penn’s DNA as he is the son of former Ohio State All-American Scoonie Penn, who was hired this summer as the director of player development. The elder Penn spent 11 years playing professionally in Europe.
Penn is making a name for himself on the court. He told Blue & Gold he averaged around 17 points, four rebounds, six assists and two steals per game during his time on the AAU circuit.
“I feel like I am a pass first guard, but can score and create at any time in the game if needed,” Penn said of his game. “I would say my three-point shot and hesitation move are my best skills on the court.”
It will be a couple of years before Penn will make his college decision, but is an early name to monitor as a target for the Irish during the 2020 cycle.
