One of Notre Dame’s top commitments in the 2017 class was back on campus last week for the Michigan State game.

Arlington Heights (Ill.) St. Viator Rivals100 tight end Cole Kmet was one of several Irish commits on hand for the 36-28 Notre Dame loss to the Spartans.

“It was great,” Kmet said of the visit. “It’s always a lot fun seeing all the guys…Brock [Wright] and all the other commits. It was good.

“They’re a young team on defense. Still a great team I think.”

Though his recruitment is already done and over with, it doesn’t mean Kmet is done being involved in the recruitment process of others. Kmet, along with the other commits who were on campus for the Michigan State game, made sure to make their rounds during the visit.

“We talked to Donovan Jeter while he was there and obviously that worked out well,” the 6-foot-6, 240-pound Kmet said. “We got around and talked to people.

“I’m sure in the next couple of days we’ll scope someone [else] out.”

Kmet and fellow tight end commit Brock Wright of Cypress (Texas) Cy-Fair have formed a close friendship throughout the process and the group as a whole continues to bond with one another.

“We talk every day in the group chat,” Kmet said. “We’re playing games with each other. It’s us being guys and it’s a lot of fun.”

For Kmet, who has been committed to Notre Dame for almost a year, his focus is on his St. Viator team and improving as a player. St. Viator won only one game during Kmet’s junior season, but under new head coach David Archibald the team is 3-2 so far this season.

“It’s a relief,” Kmet said. “I get to enjoy this [season] without worrying about what’s going on [recruiting wise].”

Kmet said he is continuing to work on his blocking and receiving skills to improve both as much as possible before he heads to South Bend.

The talented four-star tight end said he may return to South Bend the last weekend of October when the Irish welcomes Miami (FL) to Notre Dame Stadium.
