When you recruit a student-athlete you are not just recruiting that young man, to a certain degree you also have to recruit the family.

Notre Dame hosted one of the nation’s top defensive ends this weekend when Wichita (Kan.) Northwest standout Marcus Hicks made the trip to South Bend. It was his third visit to Notre Dame, and it was also the third visit for his parents.

Kelvin Hicks is a retired member of the United States Army National Guard. During his time in the Army, Mr. Hicks served three tours of duty in Iraq. He is a native of Detroit now living in Kansas, and he has been a sheriff’s deputy for 19 years. Mr. Hicks and his family have logged more than 20,000 miles in less than a year driving his family around the country to visit colleges. More than 4,500 of those miles have been used on trips to South Bend.

Following this past weekend’s visit, Mr. Hicks sat down to talk with Blue & Gold Illustrated about what the experience was like, his conversations with the Notre Dame staff and what the recruiting process is like from his perspective.
