Todd Lyght expected to join Notre Dame staff
As first reported Thursday morning, Blue & Gold Illustrated and VandySports.com have learned that Notre Dame is expected to hire former Irish cornerback Todd Lyght to be its new defensive backs coach.
Lyght, a Flint, Mich., native who was a two-time consensus All-American for Notre Dame in 1989 and 1990, accepted the job of cornerbacks coach at Vanderbilt only four weeks ago.
Lyght spent most of his career with the Los Angeles/St. Louis Rams before spending two seasons with the Detroit Lions prior to his 2002 retirement.
In 2009, Lyght served as defensive backs coach of high school powerhouse Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas, Nev., the home of current Irish left tackle Ronnie Stanley and signed prospects Aliz'e Jones and Nicco Fertitta. He joined Chip Kelly's staff at Oregon as a defensive intern from 2011-12 before following the coach to the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles.
Prior to accepting the position with Vanderbilt, Lyght spent two years with the Eagles.
Over the weekend, Irish defensive backs coach Kerry Cooks accepted a position with Oklahoma, which he made official on Twitter on Thursday morning.
Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly refused to discuss the possible departures of Cooks and quarterbacks coach Matt LaFleur, who is expected to return to the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons after one year in South Bend.
Here is a compilation of Lyght's highlights at Notre Dame that Blue & Gold Illustrated put together a few years ago:
