RECRUITMENT

Power Five Offers: Alabama, Arizona State, Auburn, Colorado, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Iowa State, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Oregon, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, UCLA, USC, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin

After growing up admiring the Notre Dame program from afar, it was clear that an Irish offer would be a big one for Carroll and his family.

That offer came in May 2017, which was a month after his initial visit to South Bend for a Sophomore Day. The Rivals100 prospect continued his glowing reviews of Notre Dame following the offer and even as he took trips to other programs as well, it was evident the Irish were in it for the long haul.

Carroll returned to Notre Dame that October to watch the program dismantle USC 49-14 at home. Throughout that fall and winter, Carroll made additional trips, including another Irish stop in February with his girlfriend. That next month, Carroll narrowed his recruitment to Notre Dame, Minnesota, Penn State, Ohio State, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin.

The talented offensive lineman made April official visits to check out the Irish, Nittany Lions and Hokies. Notre Dame got the last visit of the three and was considered the favorite going into that slate of trips, though Penn State gave him a lot to think about.

However, Carroll's fondness for Notre Dame and relationships with the Irish staff, including offensive line coach Jeff Quinn, were too much to pass up. Carroll announced his commitment a little over a week following his Irish official on a local television station.

NOTABLE

Captain for 2016-18 seasons.
His father, Jay, played 32 games in the NFL as a tight end after graduating from Minnesota.
His older brothers Collin and Kevin played football at Virginia Tech and Northern Iowa, respectively.
Another older brother, Patrick, was a pitcher at Augustana University.
Highest ranked member of Notre Dame’s 2019 class.

2019 PROJECTION

Notre Dame returns outstanding depth along the offensive line, but Carroll’s size, power and talent, along with the fact he is enrolling early, means he will have a chance to push some upperclassmen by the time the fall rolls around.

BGI ANALYSIS

Listed at 6-6 and 280 pounds, Carroll has the size and length to thrive on the edge or inside. During his senior season he spent time playing tight end, offensive tackle and guard, and he looked dominant at both line positions. That versatility only adds to his value as a prospect, and it gives him a chance to find a home in the rotation much faster.

The Edina star plays with excellent pad level for such a massive young blocker, and his ability to keep his base and explode through contact is impressive. He has always been a strong finisher, but as a senior Carroll showed greater power out of his stance, enhanced pad level and his ability to keep his base throughout the play allowed him to be even more dominant at the end of plays.

Carroll has powerful hands and shows good placement in the both the run and pass game, which make them a weapon for him. He dominates partly because he is big and strong, but he showed himself to be a fundamentally sound and smart player as a senior as well. He plays with good technique, good leverage, good angles and his timing as a blocker is advanced for his age.

Athletically he will never blow you away, but I really liked how much quicker his feet were during his senior clips. Carroll looked even more comfortable on the edge in pass protection as a senior, showing the ability to fire out of his stance, get to the speed rush on the edge, quickly react to double moves and the hand speed to compete at a high level on the edge. One knock I had on him as a junior was that he had a tell in his stance that told me when he was going to run block or pass block, but that was gone on his senior film.
