Report: Notre Dame Tabs Memphis' Chip Long As Offensive Coordinator

Memphis offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Chip Long is set to become the new offensive coordinator at Notre Dame, according to a report by Fox Sports.

In Long’s first season at Memphis — his first as an offensive coordinator/play-caller — he directed the nation’s No. 16 offense, averaging 39 points per game.

Long will get a three-year contract to run the Irish offense, the report states.

Prior to Memphis, Long spent the previous four seasons at Arizona State alongside Mike Norvell. Long coached the tight ends and was the Sun Devils’ recruiting coordinator for two seasons, then adding offensive special teams to his duties.

Long followed Norvell to Memphis following the 2015 season. According to the USA Today assistant salary database, Long made $345,000 at Memphis in 2016.

This month, Football Scoop reported that Long met with Ole Miss about the Rebels’ open OC position.

Before going to Arizona State, Long was the tight ends and fullbacks coach at Illinois from 2010-11.

The 33-year-old Long is considered one of college football’s rising offensive coaches, as well as an ace recruiter. Long was selected as one of the country’s top recruiters by Rivals in 2015. From 2012-14 while at Arizona State, Rivals listed Long as one of the top recruiters in the Pac-12.

Long grew up in Birmingham, Ala., and was a receiver and tight end at North Alabama, receiving Division II All-American honors in 2005. His first coaching job was as a graduate assistant at Louisville (2006-07), working with the quarterbacks and receivers. He then moved to Arkansas, where he was a GA working with the tight ends from 2008-09.

Notre Dame is replacing two of its top offensive coaches from last season. Offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Mike Sanford left to become the head coach at Western Kentucky. Associate head coach/receivers coach Mike Denbrock, who called the plays, is set to be the offensive coordinator at Cincinnati.
