Notre Dame assistant coach Martin Ingelsby is one of four potential finalists for the head coaching position at Delaware, according to a report from The News Journal (link).
The other candidates include Miami associate head coach Chris Caputo, Ohio State associate head coach Dave Dickerson and Philadelphia 76ers assistant Billy Lange, who are all expected on-campus early this week for interviews, according to the story.
Delaware parted ways with then-head coach Monte Ross on March 18 following a 7-23 overall record in 2015-16. The position has remained vacated while the university searched for a full-time athletic director - that job that opened up in late December - and Delaware hired Chrissi Rawak for that role on May 13.
Only nine scholarship players are active on the Blue Hens' roster, and more could depart.
Current Irish head coach Mike Brey served as head man at Delaware from 1995-2000, compiling a 99-51 record and leading his team to two NCAA tournaments. He's openly advocated for Ingelsby for the position.
“He would be a better version of me when I first went to Delaware,” Brey told The News Journal (link) on March 24. "I think somebody’s going to get him, and I’d be thrilled if the guys in Newark got him.
"I think he’d be an unbelievable fit. But that process, I’m sure, will play itself out. He’s the whole package. We’ve been known for our offensive efficiency and how we’ve played. He has as much input in what we do offensively as I do. We conspire on a lot of things.”
“I think I’m ready to be a head coach,” Ingelsby added. “I’ve always had an affinity for the school and Mike’s always spoken glowingly about his five years there.
"Great respect for the program and the university. I’ve always felt that if that job opened I’d have a great interest in it, but it sounds like they’re going to go through a process for a little while and we’ll see what happens.”
Inglesby has served on Brey's staff for 13 years at Notre Dame, including the last seven as an assistant coach. He worked the prior six years as the coordinator of basketball operations.
Delaware's campus is located in Newark, Del., which is roughly an hour drive (45 miles) from Ingelsby's hometown of Philadelphia.
