Drama and upheaval at quarterback have followed head coach Brian Kelly throughout his first five seasons at Notre Dame. It is likely to occur in his sixth as well with the competition between Everett Golson and Malik Zaire this spring.

So it's not a great surprise that the same upheaval has occurred for the men holding the title "quarterbacks coach" at Notre Dame. In the coming days, the University of Notre Dame will officially introduce Mike Sanford, formerly of Yale (2009), Western Kentucky (2010), Stanford (2011-13) and Boise State (2014), in an offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach role.
It will be Sanford's fifth school in seven years - and likely Notre Dame's fifth quarterback coach to hold that title in seven years. As stated often, college football assistant coaches come and go with great frequency through revolving doors. Here's a little history about the quarterbacks coach position at Notre Dame.
• The first to be officially designated as a "quarterback coach" was Jerry Stolz during the 2-7 season in 1963. The Irish started a record four different quarterbacks that year: Frank Budka (2-3), Sandy Bonvechio (0-2), Denis Szot (0-1) and 1964 Heisman Trophy winner John Huarte (0-1).
• Under Ara Parseghian (1964-74), there was no official quarterback coach title. Tom Pagna was his "backfield coach" all 11 seasons, with Parseghian also mentoring the quarterbacks.
• The longest stint with the "quarterback coach" title was Ron Toman under Dan Devine from 1976-80.
• During the Gerry Faust regime, Tom Lichtenberg was named the quarterback coach one year (1981), Ron Hudson the next (1982) … and in the final three years of Faust's tenure no one actually held that title.
• Lou Holtz (1986-96) was the de facto quarterback coach his first three seasons before he handed the title over to Pete Cordelli (1989-90), Peter Vaas (1991), Tom Clements (1992-94) and then Dave Roberts (1995-96) . When Roberts was give the quarterback coach and offensive coordinator title, Clements left the staff after the 1995 season as receivers coach and assistant head coach.
The Notre Dame legend who led the Irish to the 1973 national title, Clements has tutored NFL quarterbacks since 1997 and has been with the Green Bay Packers since 2006, adding the offensive coordinator title too.
• Clements is one of two former starting Notre Dame quarterbacks who moved out of non-football jobs to become QB coaches at their alma mater. Clements had been an attorney while Ron Powlus, the starter from 1994-97, including under Clements, was hired by Charlie Weis first as an administrative assistant (2005-06) and then promoted to QBs coach from 2007-09. Reportedly, he will return to the same administrative capacity at Notre Dame now under Kelly.
• Since 1980, nobody has been the quarterback coach at Notre Dame longer than three years. Others since that time have been Mike Sanford (1996-98) - the current head coach at Indiana State and father of the new Irish hire - Kevin Rogers (1999-2001), Bill Diedrick (2002-04), Vaas (2005-06), Powlus (2007-09), Charley Molnar (2010-11), Chuck Martin (2012-13) and Matt LaFleur (2014).
The biggest name who has been hired actually never ended up coaching with the Irish. On his original staff in 2005, Weis hired David Cutcliffe, who had instructed Peyton Manning at Tennessee and then Eli Manning as a successful head coach at Ole Miss from 1999-2004.
However, Cutcliffe underwent major heart surgery a couple of months into his Notre Dame stint and stepped down from the post, leading to the hiring of Vaas. As the current head coach at Duke, Cutcliffe has led the once moribund Blue Devils to a 19-8 record the past two seasons.
