The aspirations for this Notre Dame women’s basketball team make Tuesday’s ACC honors feel smaller than they should be. That shouldn’t detract from the performances of the 2024-25 regular season that the awards are recognizing.

Notre Dame guard Hannah Hidalgo received the highest conference honors as both the ACC Player of the Year and ACC Defensive Player of the Year. Hidalgo became just the fourth sophomore to win the conference’s Player of the Year award. She is also the fourth Notre Dame player to receive the award since the Irish joined the conference in the 2013-14 season.

Hidalgo followed Kayla McBride (2014), Jewell Loyd (2015), Brianna Turner (2016) as Notre Dame’s ACC Player of the Year winners. The awards for McBride and Turner came via coaches voting. The current voting is conducted by a combination of coaches and media members.

Hidalgo, who also won Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year last season, becomes the third player to win both ACC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year for the same season. She followed North Carolina’s Lindsay Harding (2007) and Virginia’s Monica Wright (2010) in doing so.

The 5-foot-6 Hidalgo entered Tuesday third in nation in scoring with 24.2 points per game and fourth in steals with 3.7 per game. Her 100 steals this regular season were 29 more than any other player in the ACC.

Teammates Olivia Miles and Sonia Citron joined Hidalgo as members of the All-ACC First Team, which consists of 15 players. Miles, who is averaging 16.5 points, 6.1 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game, received first-team recognition for the third time in her career as a Notre Dame guard. Citron, who is averaging 14.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists, received first-team recognition for the second time her Notre Dame career. The senior guard also won 2022 ACC Rookie of the Year and landed on the 2024 All-ACC Second Team.

Notre Dame forward Liatu King, who was the ACC’s Most Improved Player and an All-ACC First Team selection last year at Pittsburgh, received All-ACC Second Team honors this season. With regular season averages of 11.6 points, 10.9 rebounds, 2.0 rebounds and 1.0 blocks, she’s the only player in Division I with averages of at least 11 points, 10 rebounds, two steals and one block. King joined nine others on the All-ACC Second Team.

Hidalgo and Citron were also members of the ACC’s All-Defensive Team, which consists of six players. Freshman forward Kate Koval is one of six players on the ACC’s All-Freshman Team. Koval’s averaging 5.7 points and 5.1 rebounds per game this season.

Notre Dame head coach Niele Ivey finished second in voting for the ACC Coach of the Year. NC State’s Wes Moore received the award, which Ivey won in 2023.

The first round of the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament is scheduled for Wednesday in Greensboro, N.C. As the No. 2 seed, the Irish (25-4) received a bye into Friday’s quarterfinal round and will play one of three teams: No. 7 seed California (24-7), No. 10 seed Virginia (16-14) or No. 15 seed Pittsburgh (13-18). Cal awaits the winner of Wednesday’s Virginia-Pitt for a second round game on Thursday.
