Vanderbilt’s last and most recent trip to Notre Dame Stadium was almost 23 years to the day of this one, Sept. 16, 1995. The 41-0 Notre Dame victory saw defensive coordinator Bob Davie serve as the acting head coach because Lou Holtz was recovering from spinal surgery performed during the week at the Mayo Clinic.

There is only one other current SEC member (14 teams in all) Notre Dame shut out in its first ever meeting with them. Who was it?

A. Tennessee
B. LSU
C. Missouri
D. South Carolina

Answer: B.

In an epic defensive battle that featured future NFL MVPs Joe Theismann and Bert Jones at quarterback, No. 2 Notre Dame defeated No. 7 LSU (the SEC champ that year) 3-0 on Nov. 21, 1970, at Notre Dame Stadium.
