Per the Notre Dame student newspaper The Observer, Notre Dame senior cornerback Devin Butler was arrested Saturday at 12:28 a.m. on preliminary charges of resisting arrest and battery against a police officer. The incident took place at the Linebacker Lounge, a long-time popular student bar about a half mile southeast from the campus.

The 6-0 ½, 200-pound Washington D.C. native played in all 12 regular season games last season and started the finale at Stanford when regular starter KeiVarae Russell was out with a broken tibia. Butler was scheduled to start the Fiesta Bowl against Ohio State as well, but broke his left foot Dec. 28, four days before the game, forcing then sophomore Nick Watkins into his first career start.

After going through rehab this spring, Butler re-fractured the foot in June, had a screw placed in it and was ruled out of action for 14 to 16 weeks, or about mid-October. Speculation held that he likely would be medically redshirted and then would apply for a fifth season in 2017.

Butler finished with 11 tackles last season, and his seven stops on special teams were third most in that area. He also was credited with two passes defensed and recovered a fumbled Navy kickoff to start the second half that set up a touchdown and a 31-21 Irish lead.

Butler played all 13 games as a sophomore in 2014, started at Arizona State and USC and finished with 23 tackles (21 solo), five passes defensed, and he also intercepted a pass versus Purdue. He was used some in nickel situations as well. He appeared in all 12 games as freshman in 2013, finishing with four tackles and a pass defensed.

Notre Dame’s current cornerback situation has senior Cole Luke ensconced on the right side while sophomores Shaun Crawford and Nick Coleman are vying for the left spot because of an arm injury that will sideline Watkins for at least two more weeks. Sophomore Ashton White and freshmen Julian Love, Donte Vaughn and Troy Pride Jr. also are vying for action at nickel or corner.

Yesterday was the final day of practice in preseason camp. Freshman Orientation is this weekend, and classes begin next week.
