Las Vegas (Nv.) Bishop Gorman tight end Alize Jones has committed to Notre Dame.
Jones - the nation's No. 2 ranked tight end - had long been rumored as a potential flip candidate to Notre Dame.
But Thursday, Jones finally pulled the plug on UCLA and committed to Notre Dame.
"I am official decommitting from UCLA. Thank you to the coaches and all the fans for your love and support! God has another plan for me!," Jones tweeted.
Moments later that plan was revealed. Jones tweeted a picture of Notre Dame and announced his commitment to the Irish.
Blue & Gold Illustrated confirmed the pledge with Bishop Gorman High head coach Kenny Sanchez, who said he felt that the change was a long time in the making.
"Coach [Scott] Booker actually just walked out the door," Sanchez said. "I believe that this has been something that Alize has been thinking about for a long time."
Jones, who had been committed to UCLA last November, took an official visit to South Bend last month for the banquet weekend. It was then and there - with the other top Notre Dame targets around him - that the Irish started to real gain traction with his recruitment.
The 6-foot-5, 220-pound tight end was scheduled to take an official visit to UCLA this weekend, but Irish assistant Scott Booker's face-to-face meeting on the first day of the contact period led to the change of plans.
Jones became the 23rd verbal commitment in the class of 2015 for Notre Dame. The U.S. Army All-American is ranked by Rivals as the No. 70 prospect in the country and the top player in Nevada, but what can he do at Notre Dame is more than just be a number.
Jones gives Notre Dame a vertical pass-catching threat that has a chance to play as a freshman.
"He's one of those guys that can have an impact if he wants to," Rivals analyst Rob Cassidy said. "He's such a great receiver and a great target with speed. I think he's a guy that can play right away. That versatility fits so well especially with Notre Dame's offense."
While Booker will be credited with Jones' recruitment - and for good reason - safety Nicco Fertitta deserves some recognition as well. Fertitta, who committed to Notre Dame last spring, had been trying to pull Jones to South Bend with him ever since he pledged to the Irish.
Whatever Fertitta and Booker said eventually worked.
Jones caught 41 passes for 930 yards and 13 touchdowns this past season for a Bishop Gorman team that went 15-0 and won a state title. Jones held other scholarship offers from Auburn, Oklahoma, Georgia, Tennessee, USC and Neberaska. [rl]
