On the heels of nabbing a commitment from Rivals250 cornerback Cole Luke and shoring up its standing with Rivals100 inside linebacker Alex Anzalone, the Irish have struck for a third time in the Class of 2014 by landing a pledge from Brooklyn (N.Y.) Poly Prep defensive lineman Jay Hayes.
The 6-foot-5, 270-pound prospect confirmed the news to Irish Illustrated in a text message.
Hayes declined scholarship offers from Connecticut, Maryland, Michigan, Oregon, Penn State, Rutgers, Syracuse, Temple, UCLA and Wisconsin, among others.
“I’m looking for a place that will get me exposure,” Hayes told Irish Illustrated over the summer. “The thing about Notre Dame, they have a contract with NBC. They’re on TV every home game. That’s a blessing. I think that would be a great place but I haven’t visited yet so I don’t know if that’s the perfect place for me.”
Notre Dame has had success recruiting Poly Prep in the past in the form of offensive lineman Eric Olsen, a former four-star prospect. Olsen now plays for the New Orleans Saints.
Hayes joins Speedway (Ind.) wide receiver Justin Brent and Woodberry Forest (Va.) School inside linebacker Greer Martini as commitments for Notre Dame in the Class of 2014.
