Four-Star WR Gives Thoughts On Notre Dame Offer

Recruits in the 2021 class have been impacted by the special dead period enacted due to the pandemic much more than 2022 prospects, which is pretty obvious.

2021 recruits can sign a letter of intent beginning in December, while 2022 prospects are just entering their junior year of high school.

For Del Valle (Texas) High wide receiver Caleb Burton, a Rivals four-star prospect in the 2022 class, the biggest inconvenience has been not taking visits. But he should have plenty of time to take trips, potentially even this fall (fingers crossed).

“I’m keeping in touch with a lot of coaches and taking virtual tours of some schools,” Burton added. “It’s almost like being there. I’d rather be there in person, but you can’t do that right now, unfortunately.”

The 6-0, 162-pound playmaker had spring trips to Stanford and other Pac-12 programs cancelled due to the pandemic, and he also hoped to head to Ohio State and other Midwest schools.

One of Burton’s recent offers is from Notre Dame, as Fighting Irish wide receivers coach Del Alexander extended the new to him in early May. Burton notes that the Notre Dame offer “came out of the blue.”

“I liked him,” Burton said of Alexander. “He was super straight forward. Before he offered me, he talked to my dad and then talked to me. He didn’t offer me right away; we talked about family, school, what type of person he is. The next day, that’s when he offered me.

“I was excited. Not a lot of kids get the Notre Dame offer. They’re super good academically. Coach Alexander has been at a bunch of different places, even in the NFL. I like that, too.”

Burton has been in contact with Alexander since the offer as well.

“We’re building a relationship and telling me more about himself,” he added. “We talked about doing a virtual tour on Zoom, too.”

Burton isn’t too familiar with Notre Dame, but he knows the basics.

“I just know they are really good in education,” he said. “On the field, they’ve been really, really good the past couple years.”

Notre Dame regularly dips into Texas to sign players, but those players have to be open to going far from home. In Burton’s case, he may even prefer to leave the Lone Star State.

As a sophomore in 2019, caught 50 passes for 906 yards and 12 touchdowns in 10 games.

“I think what gets [college coaches] the most excited is my speed off the line — how quickly I can get on the DB’s toes,” Burton said. “My speed and what I can do after the catch plays a big part into it.”

Burton is a teammate of 2021 Notre Dame running back target Tavierre Dunlap.
