Notre Dame will soon be one step closer to get its scholarship count down to 85. According to sources close to the situation, rising sophomore cornerback Noah Boykin will transfer away from Notre Dame following the spring semester.

Boykin came to Notre Dame as a highly touted cornerback, ranking as the No. 204 player in the country in the 2018 class. The Washington (D.C.) H.D. Woodson alum picked the Irish on National Signing Day, and his announcement was a big surprise. It was expected that Boykin would pick Florida or Virginia, but instead he picked Notre Dame.

The 6-1, 179-pound cornerback did not see game action as a true freshman, struggling with the physical rigors and off-the-field demands of college football, especially at Notre Dame. He failed to rise up the depth chart during the spring and actually was surpassed on the depth chart by former quarterback/running back Avery Davis and senior walk-on Temitope Agoro.

When Notre Dame signed the 2018 class it was expected to have four to five cornerbacks, but with Boykin gone they are now down to just two. Houston Griffith and TaRiq Bracy, but DJ Brown was moved to safety before the spring and Joe Wilkins Jr. moved to wide receiver before fall camp started in 2018.

Notre Dame welcomes freshmen KJ Wallace and Isaiah Rutherford this summer, and it should also get back veterans Donte Vaughn and Shawn Crawford, who missed the spring with injuries.

Notre Dame is now at 86 scholarships, but it must get down to 85 by the time the 2019 season starts.
