Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly admitted Tuesday that he regrets the sideline incident that transpired - and was subsequently shown on ABC cameras - in Saturday's 24-20 win over Temple.

"First of all I'm responsible for the sideline, and our sideline was not where it needed to be," he said at his weekly press conference. "There were some things going on on the sideline that were unacceptable and it falls on my shoulders.
"If we were to get a penalty in that time of the game, it would have fell on me as being somebody that can't control the sideline.
"So moving forward we've made some changes about how we're going to do things on the sideline. And then how we'll have a different sideline situation. Having said that, I wish that situation never occurred.
"I regret that it happened. [Assistant strength and conditioning coordinator] David [Grimes] and I have met. We have met about the situation and we've moved past it. Dave's a valuable employee. He's a guy that does a great job here and he'll be with us a long time."
When asked about the incident, which involved Kelly grabbing Grimes by the shirt after the latter was seen arguing with the refs, Kelly had previously called it an internal matter or explained it by saying he was trying to avoid a 15-yard penalty.
"They don't know what happened," Kelly said Sunday of outside criticism. "It's typical of those that are just looking at the video without having any of the information. You know, only those that are clearly near the situation that have all the information can make those judgments. It's an internal matter, and we're handling it internally.
"We're handling it just like anybody else would handle personnel matters: Internally. Those aren't for public notice. We'll handle those matters internally."
Grimes played at Notre Dame from 2005 to 2008 before joining the program again in 2011.
