This weekend, Notre Dame will play host to four-star Rivals250 2019 linebacker JD Bertrand, a former Georgia commit.
Betrand backed off his pledge to Georgia last week and visited Florida over the weekend. He will visit Notre Dame unofficially this weekend in hopes of landing an offer.
The former UGA commit said he has had his eye on Notre Dame for a while and is looking forward to seeing the program up close.
“Notre Dame has always caught my eye,” Bertrand told Blue & Gold Illustrated. “They have a great education and football team.”
This weekend, Bertrand said he is looking forward to sitting down with the Irish coaching staff and touring campus.
“I’m very excited to meet the coaches,” Bertrand explained. “And to see the campus and tradition there.”
After his decommitment, Bertrand has come into contact with several coaching staffs across the country, but Irish defensive coordinator Clark Lea was in contact with him even when he was still a Bulldog.
Lea, Bertrand said, has made a strong impression on him so far.
“I have talked to Coach Lea for a long time on the phone,” Bertrand said. “He seems like a very smart coach that cares about his guys and can develop his players very well.”
Although he doesn’t have an offer from the Irish yet, one could very well be on the way this weekend. If an offer is put on the table, Bertrand said he’d be fired up, and Notre Dame would absolutely be in contention.
“An offer from Notre Dame would be great,” he said. “They would definitely be a top school.”
Since backing off his pledge to Georgia, Bertrand has received an offer from TCU to go along with his additional offers from Florida, LSU, Stanford, Tennessee and several others.
Rivals rates Bertrand as the No. 12 inside linebacker and No. 247 overall player in the class of 2019.
