According to Sports Illustrated, Notre Dame offensive coordinator Mike Sanford is expected to be the next head coach at Western Kentucky.

WBKO, a television station that covers WKU athletics, Sanford is a candidate for the job but has not yet been hired.

Sanford would replace Jeff Brohm, who left Western Kentucky for the same position at Purdue.

Sanford spent the past two seasons at Notre Dame. Prior to that stint, he was the offensive coordinator at Boise State, his alma mater.

The 34-year-old Sanford spent the 2010 season at Western Kentucky as quarterbacks coach. He also coached at Stanford from 2011 through 2013.

Sanford helped Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer — who Monday declared for the NFL Draft — thrive in 2015 as a sophomore. Kizer also set many records in 2016 as a junior.

Though Sanford does not have full play-calling duties with the Irish, a job split between head coach Brian Kelly and receivers coach Mike Denbrock, he is considered a bright offensive mind.

Sanford is the son of Mike Sanford, a longtime assistant and former head coach at UNLV and Indiana State.
