The first thing most people who watch new Notre Dame wide receiver commit Geordon Porter play football talk about is his speed, and it’s easy to see why.

Porter pulls double duty as track and football standout at Etiwanda (Calif.) High, and is one of the faster receivers in the country.

However, Etiwanda head coach Kevin Davis said there’s something else that truly separates Porter from the crowd.

“We have our team vote for captains and he was voted one of our four captains this year,” Davis told Blue & Gold Illustrated. “From a character standpoint, he does his part and has the trust of his teammates.”

During the offseason, Davis said it was easy to tell the latest Notre Dame pledge would end up a captain.

“We’ve got some really great senior leadership this year,” Davis said. “As we got into our winter conditioning and spring practice, you saw some guys that are naturally going to take that leadership role, and he was one of them for sure.”

For Etiwanda, Porter has become a living example of doing things the right way on and off the field.

According to Davis, Porter keeps his head down and goes about his business off the field, but flips a switch when the lights come on Friday night.

“He’s a great competitor,” Davis said. “He’s not always a rah-rah guy, but when it’s time to play, you definitely see the beast come out of him. He loves to compete and is very physical.”

All of these traits, Davis said, should make for a perfect fit in South Bend.

“He’s a high character kid and he carries himself really well on campus,” Davis said. “He’s always positive and from what I know about the program, I definitely see him as a good fit. For sure.”

Davis added that it appears Porter is just as excited about Notre Dame as the Irish coaching staff is about him.

“When they showed up on campus, I know he was fired up,” Davis said. “The whole family was fired up when Notre Dame came into the picture.”
