Notre Dame Names Its 2017 Team Captains

Notre Dame announced its 2017 team captains during its Echoes Awards Dinner.

The Irish will have seven team captains next season: senior quarterback DeShone Kizer, senior linebacker Greer Martini, fifth-year senior offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey, senior linebacker Nyles Morgan, senior offensive guard Quenton Nelson, senior safety Drue Tranquill and senior wide receiver Austin Webster.

The Irish typically announce their team captains during preseason practice.

McGlinchey is a two-time team captain, having served in that role in 2016. He’s the 22nd two-time captain in Irish history.

According to Notre Dame, Webster is the first active walk-on in to serve as team captain in program history.

Kizer, who was also the team's MVP, has not announced whether he's returning for his senior season or entering the NFL Draft.

Martini played in all 12 games in 2016, recording four starts.

Morgan started 12 games at linebacker in 2016, and led the team with 94 tackles and four sacks.

Nelson started all 12 games at left guard in 2016.

Tranquill, a 2016 Academic All-American, started all 12 games at safety.
