Notre Dame Visit Impresses 2019 Tennessee ATH Dayron Johnson
Notre Dame hosted a multitude of prospects yesterday including 2019 athlete Dayron Johnson of Springfield (Tenn.) High.
The 5-foot-9, 163-pounder participated in a camp in South Bend this summer, but got a chance to watch the Irish in action under the lights.
“It was a great experience,” Johnson told Blue & Gold Illustrated. “I really loved the atmosphere. It was really good. I was able to take a tour of the campus and everything. Got to talk to some people about how good the education is there and how if you graduate from Notre Dame you’d be set for life.
“The visit was better than what I thought it would be. It was way better.”
Johnson said the highlight of the trip was being able to talk to the coaches including a conversation with wide receivers coach Del Alexander.
“He seems pretty cool,” Johnson said of Alexander. “He’s really relaxed and seems like a good man overall … We talked about the season I’m having and how he’s ready to see more of my film, so he can show the other coaches.
“He told me he likes how I can take screen plays to the distance. Turn short plays into long runs.”
The atmosphere inside Notre Dame Stadium during the game also stood out to the junior.
“The atmosphere was really crazy,” Johnson explained. “Their fan base is amazing. There’s nothing like it. The fans really love the players. It’s really great.”
Johnson plays to visit Louisville and Cincinnati this month. He hopes to return to Notre Dame.
“I love it,” Johnson said of Notre Dame. “I think it’s a great school and a great fit for me. I want to come back. I would love to come back again.”
Johnson is still waiting for his first offer. He mentioned Navy has also asked him to take a visit.
Last season in eight games, according to MaxPreps, Johnson ran for 319 yards and four touchdowns on 31 carries and added 379 yards and six touchdowns on 26 receptions as a receiver. The athlete registered 26 tackles and three interceptions.
Johnson mentioned he plays running back, wide receiver, cornerback, safety and both kick and punt returner for his Springfield team.
“A leader,” Johnson said when asked to describe himself. “I try to lead and try to rally the guys. Try to be the best teammate I can be … I got big play ability. I can stretch the field and catch the ball pretty well. I think run routes pretty well.”
