Stanford head coach David Shaw is 5-2 all time against Notre Dame for a .714 winning percentage. Among coaches who have played Notre Dame at least five times, USC’s Pete Carroll is the only one with a better winning percentage at 8-1 (.889) from 2001-09.

What coach has the best winning percentage versus the Fighting Irish after having played them at least 10 times?

A. USC’s John Robinson
B. Purdue’s Jack Mollenkopf
C. Michigan State’s Duffy Daugherty
D. Penn State’s Joe Paterno

Answer: B.

It was close, but Mollenkopf’s 10-4 record from 1956-69 came out to .714, while Robinson was at .708 with his 8-3-1 mark, first from 1976-82 (6-1) and then 1993-97 (2-2-1).
