10 In the last 10 seasons (2007-16), Notre Dame has received an NCAA Tournament invitation eight times. That is the best 10-year streak by the men’s basketball program since 1972-81, when the Irish made it eight out of 10 as well (eight straight from 1974-81). The streak ended in 1982 with a 10-17 record, and Notre Dame didn’t get back in until 1985.

9 Wins in the NCAA Tournament by Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey (9-10 overall). He is six wins away from tying Digger Phelps’ school men’s record of 15 (15-16), achieved during his 20 years from 1971-91, although one of the victories was a consolation game.

8 Times in its 35 appearances that Notre Dame won back-to-back NCAA Tournament games — most recently last year while tying a school record with three straight conquests: 1953, 1954, 1958, 1978 (three), 1979, 1987, 2003 and 2015 (three).

7 ACC teams that received bids to the NCAA Tournament this season, tying it for the most among any conference. Against the six league foes the Fighting Irish faced that made it to the Big Dance, they were 3-6: Duke (2-0), North Carolina (1-1), Miami (0-2), Virginia (0-1), Syracuse (0-1) and Pitt (0-1). However, Notre Dame also defeated Louisville, which might have replaced Syracuse in the NCAA Tournament had the Cardinals not administered self-sanctioned tournament probation for this season.

6 Seed for Notre Dame in the East Regional of the NCAA Tournament. Since the start of seeding in 1979, the Irish are 1-3 in the tournament as a No. 6 seed. They won versus No. 11 seed Xavier in the 2001 first round before losing to No. 3 seed Mississippi in the ensuing game, and also fell in the first rounds to No. 11 seeds Winthrop in 2007 and Old Dominion in 2010.

5 Notre Dame players averaging double-figure scoring: junior guard Demetrius Jackson (15.6), senior post Zach Auguste (14.7), junior guard Steve Vasturia (12.3), sophomore forward Bonzie Colson (11.9) and junior wing V.J. Beachem (10.1). The only other year Notre Dame had five double-figure scorers was 1976-77 with Duck Williams, Toby Knight, Dave Batton, Bruce Flowers and Rich Branning.

4 For the first time in its NCAA Tournament history, Notre Dame will play the winner of a First Four play-in game, with Michigan-Tulsa facing off on Wednesday. Both have been described by numerous college basketball analysts as teams unworthy to be in the tourney. The victor will play the Irish Friday, March 18, at approximately 9:30 p.m. ET in Brooklyn, N.Y. The game will be played in the Barclays Center and broadcast live nationally on CBS.

3 Notre Dame is attempting to win two straight NCAA Tournament games in consecutive years for only the third time in its history. The other two were 1953-54 and 1978-79.

2 Provided that Friday’s opening round opponent is Michigan, Notre Dame has faced the Wolverines twice in the NCAA Tournament, a 77-68 loss in Tuscaloosa, Ala., in 1974 and an 80-76 defeat in Louisville, Ky., in 1976, both in the second round. The Irish are only 3-13 against Big Ten teams in the NCAA Tournament.

1 This will be Notre Dame’s first NCAA Tournament appearance in the state of New York, the home state of freshmen Matt Ryan (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) and Elijah Burns (Troy, N.Y.). Ryan is a 6-8 forward while the 6-9 forward Burns was redshirted.
