The most enjoyable part of being a recruiting writer is telling the unique stories of high school football prospects. No two recruitments are the same.
Take Zionsville (Ind.) High class of 2022 offensive tackle Joey Tanona for example. He played his entire sophomore season without a scholarship offer in hand. He just hoped that he’d catch the attention of Division I coaches at some point.
He did, with Iowa becoming the first school to offer him in January. He added Tennessee to his offer list the following month, another welcomed scholarship offer.
The dead period enacted by the NCAA period due to the coronavirus dead period had no negative affect on Tanona’s recruiting process. He earned offers from LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State, Ohio State and others during the spring.
To go from a prospect with no scholarship offers to having national championship contenders after his services in the matter of five months was something Tanona didn’t see coming.
“It was a huge surprise,” he said.
His offer from the in-state Fighting Irish came May 1. He received the news from offensive line coach Jeff Quinn.
