Chris Mitchell wants to get a closer look at Notre Dame.

Mithcell, a 6-foot, 190 pound cornerback from Mission Viejo (Calif.) High, picked up a Notre Dame offer on June 11, and wil likely make it to campus for visit by the end of the month.

Although a specific date hasn’t been set yet, Mitchell said he’s ecstatic about making the trip.

“It just opens things up,” Mitchell said of the offer. “I’m going to visit soon with my grandpa and my dad, and they’re excited.”

Special teams coach Brian Polian had been evaluating Mitchell for a few weeks before extending the offer, and the California talent said it was well worth the wait.

“It was extremely incredible,” Mitchell said. “I know Notre Dame, I know the football team, the academics, and how they’re such a prestigious school and team. I was really happy and my mom was so excited. It was just a great night.”

The visit to South Bend was decided on almost immediately after the offer came.

Mitchell said he’s intrigued by what Notre Dame has to offer, and is excited to see a non-West Coast school up close.

“I’ve never been in that part of the country,” Mitchell said. “It really interests me to get out there and go check it out.”

Mitchell said one the main reasons he’s so high on Notre Dame already is the way Polian has approached his recruitment.

The Mission Viejo product said Polian’s relaxed demeanor makes him a fun guy to be around.

“He’s a great dude and he’s funny,” Mitchell said. “He likes the way I play.”

As it stands, the Irish are Mitchell’s biggest offer. Mitchell’s other offers include Colorado State, San Diego State, Connecticut, UC Davis and Washington State.

After adding Notre Dame to that list, Mitchell said the Irish shot right up to the top.

“They’re definitely in the top group,” Mitchell said. “Definitely.”
