Notre Dame Midseason Offensive Breakdown

A few notes on Notre Dame’s snap counts and production through seven games:

• Notre Dame has used at least one running back on 98.5 percent of its offensive snaps. Sophomore Josh Adams is playing the most snaps (54.7 percent), followed by senior Tarean Folston (24.7), sophomore Dexter Williams (18.9) and senior Josh Anderson (0.2).

• Adams has the highest percentage of targets (rushing attempts + targeted on passes) in the Irish offense at 27.8 percent. He has 89 rushes for 416 yards and 15 catches for 133 yards on 19 targets.

Junior quarterback DeShone Kizer has the next highest percentage of targets (20.4), carrying 78 times for 285 yards and one target in the passing game.

In the receiving corps, sophomore Equanimeous St. Brown is targeted the most (13.7 percent), followed by senior Torii Hunter Jr. (11.6) and sophomore C.J. Sanders (11.6). Notre Dame’s tight ends — senior Durham Smythe and junior Nic Weishar — have just 3.3 percent of the targets.

• In terms of reliance — how often each player runs or is targeted in the passing game when they’re in the game — Adams is again Notre Dame’s leader in the rotating backfield at 39.7 percent. Folston gets the ball 38.2 percent of the time when he’s in the game, and Williams

Among receivers, freshman Kevin Stepherson a major target when he’s in. The Florida native has been targeted 19 times on his 158 total snaps, a reliance percentage of 12 percent.

Notre Dame’s top three receivers get the ball an equal amount when each is in the game. St. Brown is targeted on 13.8 percent of his snaps, while Sanders (13 percent) and Hunter (11.4) get similar attention.

• When looking at production — player yards / team yards — St. Brown has carried the torch for the Irish at 21.1 percent of the offense. Adams is second at 19 percent and Hunter is third at 12.4 percent.

Kizer’s rushing production is 9.8 percent of the offense. Sanders’ receiving is at 9.0 percent. Folston is 7.6 percent, Stepherson is 7.2 percent and Williams is 6.7 percent. No other player accounts for more than 2 percent of the offense.
