Adding at least one more safety to Rivals100 member and Marietta (Ga.) Lassiter product Derrik Allen has been a goal for the Irish in recent months.

The staff didn’t have to go too far to find that player.

Notre Dame landed a commitment from Mishawaka (Ind.) Penn safety Paul Moala during his official visit for the USC game,

Moala is commitment No. 17 for the Irish in the 2018 class and is the second defensive back in the group. The 6-0, 202-pounder also held offers from Nebraska, Vanderbilt and Iowa, among others.

The recruitment of Moala has been an interesting one. Given his proximity to Notre Dame, it was believed he would commit shortly after landing an offer during Irish Invasion this summer. Moala impressed the Notre Dame staff during the camp, running a sub-4.5 40-yard dash and performing well in drills.

“It's extremely big for me and my family,” Moala said of the offer in June. “It’s a dream to be offered by such a great school that’s just down the road.

“It’s truly a blessing from God. I'm just excited and humbled by the offer. I have so much respect for this program. Most of my offers didn’t happen face to face, so to have that happen was great and beyond respectable.”

Moala took his time with the process, making multiple trips back to Notre Dame including one over the summer and for the first two homes games of the season (Temple and Georgia).
