Kyle Getter once replaced Micah Shrewsberry on a college basketball staff. Now the two will be working together at Notre Dame.

Getter, who coached at Virginia the past five seasons, became Shrewberry's first official hire Friday when Notre Dame announced Getter as the men's basketball program's associate head coach under head coach Shrewsberry. Later Friday afternoon, the Irish announced the hiring of assistant coach Mike Farrelly, who spent the last two seasons with Shrewsberry at Penn State.

Getter and Shrewsberry share the same alma mater: Hanover College in Indiana. Getter became a student assistant coach at Hanover in 1999 after spending two seasons as a player at Centre College, another Division III school in Kentucky. Shrewsberry graduated from Hanover earlier in '99. Getter graduated in 2001.

Getter and Shrewsberry were at the same place at different times again at Marshall. In 2005, Getter replaced Shrewsberry as Marshall's director of men's basketball operations after Shrewsberry became the head coach at Indiana University South Bend.

Getter's well-traveled career also includes non-coaching positions at Dayton and Wright State. His assistant coaching stops include Liberty, Radford, VCU and NAIA Walsh University.

“I am truly honored for the chance to work with Coach Shrewsberry and the rest of the staff at the University of Notre Dame," Getter said in a statement released by the university. "My family and I are very blessed with the opportunity to become a part of such a prestigious institution with a great basketball tradition."

In his five-year tenure at Virginia — the first three as director of recruiting/player development and the last two as an assistant coach — the Cavaliers won the 2019 national championship and three ACC regular-season titles (2019, 2021, 2023).

Virginia signed 14 prospects in the five recruiting cycles while Getter was with the program. Eleven of them were rated as four-star recruits by Rivals. The other three were three-star recruits.

“I am very excited to be adding Kyle to our staff," Shrewsberry said in a released statement. "He’s a rising star in this business with a proven track record for success at each of the stops along his coaching journey. Kyle has a relentless work ethic and incredible attention to detail. He’s an integral piece of what we are trying to accomplish and build here at Notre Dame. We are excited to welcome Kyle, his wife Michelle, his son William and daughter Madelyn.”

Farrelly joined Shrewsberry at Penn State after coaching at Hofstra for eight seasons including a stretch as the acting head coach during the 2020-21 season. Farrelly also coached at Niagara and Mount Saint Mary's. He played for head coach Phil Martelli at St. Joseph's and graduated in 2003.

“My family and I are thrilled to come to South Bend and become part of the Notre Dame community," Farrelly said in a statement released by the university. "Working for Coach Shrewsberry for the last two years has been unbelievably rewarding and I am really excited to help him continue to build on the great tradition of Notre Dame basketball. Notre Dame is a special place and I can’t wait to get started."

Penn State went 37-31 in two seasons with Farrelly and Shrewsberry on staff. The 2022 recruiting class that signed to play for them was ranked by Rivals as No. 21 in the country. Then the Nittany Lions made the NCAA Tournament in 2023 for the first time since 2011 and won their first tournament game since 2001.

“Mike was a big part of the success that we were able to have at Penn State,” Shrewsberry said in a released statement. “Mike’s energy and drive are unmatched. One of Mike’s greatest strengths lies in his ability to build relationships and connect both with his current players and recruits. I know Mike will be a great leader and great addition to our program. We are happy to welcome Mike, Gina, MJ, and Ryan Farrelly to the Notre Dame family.”
