Notre Dame senior center Sam Mustipher heads into his second season as a starter with greater expectations, and a strong season could put him in contention for post-season honors.

Every year the nation’s top center is awarded the Rimington Trophy, and Mustipher was named to the Watch List for that award. Mustipher is one of 63 players to make the initial list.

The award is named after former Nebraska center Dave Rimington, arguably the most decorated center in college football history. Rimington is the only two-time winner of the Outland Trophy, which is given annually to the top interior offensive or defensive lineman in the country.

On top of that honor, Rimington was also a two-time first team All-American (1981 and 1982) and won Big Eight Conference Offensive Player of the Year honors following the 1982 season. Rimington also won the Lombardi Award following his senior season, which is given each year to the best offensive lineman, defensive lineman or linebacker in the country.

Rimington was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1997.

Notre Dame will face six other Rimington Trophy Watch List players in 2017: Michigan State senior Brian Allen, Miami (Ohio) sophomore Danny Godlevske, Stanford junior Jesse Burkett, Boston College senior Jon Baker, Temple redshirt freshman Matt Hennessy and Wake Forest junior Ryan Anderson, who started at right tackle last season.
