As soon as 2019 Notre Dame cornerback commit KJ Wallace arrived at Atlanta Lovett School, head coach Mike Muschamp knew he had to get him on the field.

Wallace came in and grabbed a starting spot right away and it’s been that way ever since.

“When he started as a freshmen, we had him playing on varsity, and we don’t always do that,” Muschamp explained. “He started the first game both ways. He has tremendous athletic ability that only gets better because he works hard at it.”

Muschamp has been coaching at Lovett for more than a decade, and has had his share of major college football recruits come through his program.

In that time, Muschamp has seen hundreds of different personalities, but said Wallace’s truly stands out.

“He has the desire to get better,” Muschamp began. “He takes coaching extremely well and he is a constant learner and a constant student. He works hard to try to become the best that he can be. I think that’s where you start to see the difference between a guy that’s been blessed with a lot of ability and a guy who’s willing to push himself to get to whole other level. KJ has been that guy ever since he got here.”

When he arrived at Lovett, Wallace didn’t have a specific position, though he eventually found his calling in the defensive backfield.

However, Muschamp said the Irish commit is too talented to play just one position, especially at the high school level.

“We put him at quarterback, we put him in the backfield and did all kinds of stuff just to create ways to get him the football,” Mushcamp said. “He really thrived in that situation. He’s dynamic with the ball in his hands and he makes really good things happen.”

Wallace is committed to Notre Dame as a cornerback, and Muschamp said he believes South Bend is the perfect place for his standout athlete.

“He wanted a place that is an academically oriented, high profile football type school,” Muschamp said. “He got an awful lot of offers from a lot of different places, but that’s what he said he really was looking for. I think this is really a great marriage of those desires.”
