Notre Dame benefited from a North Carolina victory over Duke on Saturday night, securing a double-bye for the Irish in this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament in Brooklyn, N.Y.

The Irish received the three-seed in the 15-team conference tournament, which begins Tuesday at Barclays Center. Notre Dame finished the regular season 23-8 overall and 12-6 in the conference.

Notre Dame will play the winner of No. 6 Virginia vs. the winner of No. 11 Georgia Tech/No. 14 Pittsburgh at 9 p.m. Thursday on ESPN.

The Irish have a double-bye in the league tournament for a third-straight season. They won the ACC Tournament in 2015 and made the semifinals last season.

"It's unbelievable. It's going to be great," Brey said of the ACC Tournament. "When we first got to the league, and Louisville came a year after, Jamie Dixon, Jim Boeheim, and myself, in the first league meetings we attended, they made us talk about how thrilling it was…playing in New York for your league tournament.

"I thought there'd be blowback and that night at the cocktail hour I had, the (associate athletic director) from Florida State, 'Man, that sounds great. That sounds exciting.' So I think it's awesome that we'll be up there for two years, and what a league. This league is unbelievable and we're just thrilled we survived most of it."

Should Notre Dame face the Cavaliers — the likely opponent — it would face a definite challenge. Head coach Tony Bennett’s Virginia team beat Notre Dame 71-54 Jan. 24 this season. Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey has never defeated Bennett in six tries, including all five matchups as ACC teams.

Should Notre Dame advance, it would likely play second-seeded Florida State.
