Quenton Nelson never saw much need in dragging out the recruiting process should the right choice present itself.
Turns out the Rivals100 offensive tackle from Red Bank, N.J., came face to face with that option during a visit to Notre Dame earlier this spring. Nelson named the Irish his leader shortly thereafter and committed Wednesday, releasing the news via Twitter.
"Officially committed to Notre Dame," Nelson announced, later confirming it in a text message.
Nelson chose Notre Dame over finalists Boston College, Ohio State, Penn State and Rutgers. Other scholarship offers on the table included Alabama, Cal, Miami, Ole Miss, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon, Stanford, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech, among others.
Nelson is the ninth commitment for Notre Dame in the Class of 2014 and third on the offensive line. He joins four-star prospects Sam Mustipher and Jimmy Byrne in the position group.
Earlier this spring Nelson visited South Bend and scored an offer with the visit leaving such an impression the Irish emerged as a clear favorite.
"The campus there is awesome," Nelson told Irish Illustrated at the Rivals Camp Series presented by Under Armour in New Jersey last weekend. "They have the No. 1 business school, which I wanna major in business. And they have a very good offensive line coach that has been in the NFL, that has been everywhere, coach Hiestand." rates Nelson the No. 66 prospect overall in the latest Rivals100 and No. 8 offensive tackle nationally.
