This week quietly marks what was a cause celebre created by the University of Notre Dame football program 30 years ago when it was at the zenith of its power.
Among the seven deadly sins, greed and envy were at the forefront when Notre Dame signed its landmark individual television contract with NBC in February 1990 to exclusively telecast all its home games.
In its Feb. 19, 1990 edition, Sports Illustrated wrote the famous headline “We’re Notre Dame And You’re Not” to describe why the Irish administration opted to go for the big NBC bucks rather than be a “team player” with the rest of the NCAA.
Naturally, righteous indignation was spewed from other universities regarding Notre Dame’s greed.
