Eichenberg tweeted Sunday, that he had picked Notre Dame over his other finalist, Ohio State. He took a two-day visit to Notre Dame April 10-11 and was at Ohio State over this past weekend. His plan all along was to announce a decision after visiting both schools, but it was clear before he even arrived in Columbus on Friday, that Notre Dame had the inside edge in his recruitment.
Eichenberg's father, Greg, told Blue & Gold Illustrated on April 13 that his son really liked Notre Dame.
"Our entire family enjoyed the trip to ND … special place," Greg Eichenberg said. "OSU this weekend … difficult act to follow."
The 6-5, 284-pound lineman is ranked by Rivals.com as the the No. 16 player in Ohio and the No. 37 offensive tackle in the country. He becomes the second offensive lineman to commit to the Irish, joining Cincinnati Elder four-star tackle Tommy Kramer in the class.
Eichenberg has already been invited to play in the 2016 U.S. Army All-American Bowl. He's on track to be a three-year starter at St. Ignatius and has played both guard and tackle at the powerhouse program. Eichenberg also held scholarship offers from Alabama, Florida State, Michigan, Penn State, Rutgers, Miami and Boston College.
Notre Dame has now secured commitments from two out of the top three ranked offensive linemen in the state of Ohio for the class of 2016 with Eichenberg and Kraemer both on board.
