Thompsons Station (Tenn.) Independence three-star wide receiver TJ Sheffield is already recognized as a standout prospect, but the Irish target said he’s nowhere close to where he wants to be.

In the final year of his high school career, Sheffield goals are simple.

“I just want to try to be the best I can be,” Sheffield said. “I just want to do what I can do to be the best I can.”

Team-wise, Sheffield of course wants to be able to lead his team to a state championship after exiting the playoffs in the second round last year. He said if he can do that, and maybe nab some recognition on the way, it would be a pretty good year.

“I just want to win a state championship,” Sheffield said. “And make all-state.”

Having a player like Sheffield on the roster certainly increases a team’s chances of winning a championship.

Currently, Sheffield holds several offers from all over the country, including Ole Miss, Penn State, Purdue, Stanford, Tennessee and Virginia Tech, among others.

A chance to play big-time college football, Sheffield said, is something he didn’t see coming.

“It’s exciting because not many kids get to go through this experience,” he noted. “I’m just blessed.”

Though the recruiting process can undoubtedly become an overwhelming process, Sheffield said it is a grind he has come to enjoy over the last few years.

“I’m just talking it in right now,” he stated. “I’m just weighing my options and that’s about it.”

Of course, with all the offers and acclaim, it would be easy for a teenager to get big head, and there’s no shortage of those kinds of stories in the recruiting world.

But for Sheffield, there’s an easy solution to feeling prideful.

“It’s not hard to be humble,” Sheffield explained. “I just be humble.”
