Notre Dame has the luxury of evaluating 2021 quarterbacks closely with commits already in the 2019 and 2020 classes.

The Irish hosted potentially one of the top signal callers in the current sophomore class this weekend when Highlands Ranch (Colo.) High product Jake Rubley returned to South Bend.

Rubley participated in a camp this summer with quarterbacks coach Tom Rees, and the 6-foot-3, 186-pounder got his first taste of a game day watching Notre Dame take down Stanford 38-17.

“Between the coaches, the people showing us around campus and the game, everything was perfect for me,” Rubley told Blue & Gold Illustrated. “I was able to see a little of South Bend, which was pretty sweet. I was able to hear Coach Brian Kelly talk after the game. That was definitely my favorite part of the whole experience. I loved how after they won the locker atmosphere was nothing like I’ve seen before. It was great.”

After watching Ian Book throw for 278 yards and four touchdowns up close, Rubley is a fan of the Irish offense from a quarterback standpoint.

“They have playmakers and their offensive line is stellar,” Rubley began. “He wasn’t getting pressured really at all and he had gaps to run when he did. Their offense was moving. It’s not like a pro offense. I like how they spread them out and play ball. They can throw the heck out of it or running the heck out of it, whichever is working for them.”

While he was in town, Rubley had the opportunity to spend more time with Rees and continue building their relationship.

“It was awesome to hear him say that they would keep watching my film in the fall and stay connected,” Rubley said. “He said he checked out the film of my first five games and that I played well. He’s going to re-evaluate the film at the end of the year and go from there.

“He has a great personality. He’s funny and cool to hang out with. He knows his stuff too. I like him a lot.”

Rubley has already picked up offers from the likes of South Carolina, Texas Tech, Colorado and Colorado State with Washington, Northwestern, Oklahoma State and others showing interest. He is planning to visit the Buffaloes, Gamecocks, Red Raiders and Wildcats this fall for games as well.

Notre Dame has offered just two quarterbacks in 2021 (Tyler Buchner and Preston Stone), and Rubley will be in consideration as the Irish continue to evaluate the class and likely expand the board.
