Notre Dame offensive tackle signee Cole Mabry didn’t always think college football was in his future.

Mabry, a 6-foot-5, 275-pound product of Brentwood (Tenn.) High, said he wasn’t particualry athletic growing up, but in a few months when he enrolls at Notre Dame on a football scholarship, he’ll be doing something that the majority of young football players only get to dream about.

While Mabry has put in a ton of work himself, the Irish signee said he’d be nowhere withouth the guidance he received from his coaches at Brentwood.

“I think it’s really cool, especially for all my coaches,” Mabry said. “I don’t think I was naturally a great athlete and I didn’t weigh a whole lot coming into the program.”

Heading into high school, Mabry had work to do in the weight room, and while he’s shown vas improvement there, the three-star said his coaches made an equal if not bigger impact on his life outside of football.

“I think they really developed me,” Mabry said. “I think it speaks volumes about their development of me and their development of my character.”

Brentwood isn’t a school that’s nationally known for pumping out major college football prospects, but Mabry said the support system he had there was the best he could have asked for.

“I don’t think I’d have nearly the same values if I wasn’t on the team,” Mabry said. “They just inspired me and made me a better person.”

Like most football players who grow up in the south, Mabry thought for a long time that the SEC was his future.

Then he visited Notre Dame, and everything changed in a hurry. This summer, Mabry will leave home in Tennessee for South Bend, ready to take the next step in his football career.

“I’m not playing SEC football, but it’s right up there with it,” Mabry said. “It’s just as good. I mean, it’s Notre Dame.”
