Irish nab Georgia punter

Tyler Newsome needed little time to consider the most recent scholarship offer.
Less than one day after landing an offer from Notre Dame after working out at camp the punter from Carrollton, Ga., made a verbal commitment. Newsome is the first specialist to join the Irish recruiting haul and the 12th commitment overall in the Class of 2014.

Newsome released the news via Twitter then confirmed it in a text message.
"It's a blessing and I know God has a lot in store for me," Newsome said. "I just have to stay humble and keep working."
Newsome also held an offer from Air Force.
Notre Dame last used a scholarship on a specialist in the Class of 2012 when long snapper Scott Daly signed. Kyle Brindza, a kicker and punter, accepted a scholarship the previous year.
After camp Thursday, Newsome met with head coach Brian Kelly and received the offer. Newsome is slated to punt and compete for kickoff duties.
Coming up this season the Irish will have multiple punters on the roster. Brindza punted in the spring. He will be joined by freshman walk-on Andrew Antognoli and Alex Wulfeck, a transfer from Wake Forest expected to use his last season of eligibility in South Bend.
