Notre Dame hosted one of Indiana’s best in the 2019 class the other weekend for the Irish’s big matchup against the Georgia Bulldogs: Merrillville (Ind.) Andrean linebacker Cameron Williams.

It was a meaningful visit for the 6-foot-3, 205-pounder.

“It was my very first live college football game, so it was special and the atmosphere was amazing,” Williams told Blue & Gold Illustrated. “The game was competitive … It was a great game and an eye opening experience. Notre Dame has a lot to offer.

“[I got to] talk to the coaching staff, view the facilities, meet with other prospects and learn about the academic opportunities.”

Williams had brief interactions with defensive line coach Mike Elston, linebackers coach Clark Lea and running backs coach Autry Denson. Meeting Denson and the staff was the highlight of the entire visit for the Rivals250 prospect.

“He's a legendary player and now a coach at Notre Dame and even greater person,” Williams said of Denson. “Meeting the coaching staff was the best part because their interest was real and genuine.

"All the conversations were brief and more of an introduction and the start of building the relationship … They’re all great guys. Their message was to get great grades, great film and that’s the Notre Dame way.”

After watching the Irish defense up close, he feels his game is similar to a couple of players roaming the second level of the field.

“Defense looked great,” Williams stated. "They had some massive defensive linemen and athletic linebackers. I see my game as a mix between Nyles Morgan and Drue Tranquill. Both are very athletic and instinctive.”

His visit to Notre Dame gave Williams a good look at the Irish program. He liked what he saw.

“Definitely was impressed with everything,” Williams said. “I saw that it's an elite academic institution and that's big for me and my family. Everything about the football program was great ... Notre Dame has great facilities, great coaches and a great game day atmosphere.”

Williams hopes to make it back to Notre Dame for the USC game Oct. 21. He’s planning to have a busy schedule making visits to out of region programs such as Oregon, North Carolina, UCLA and Syracuse along with Midwest schools like Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Iowa, Indiana, Iowa State, Illinois and Purdue.

North Carolina, Iowa State, Syracuse, Northern Illinois, Bowling Green and Arkansas State are the early offers for the four-star prospect.

Williams, who ranks as the nation’s No. 9 outside linebacker and No. 189 player nationally, has 26 tackles and six sacks in four games this season, according to MaxPreps.
