Hezekiah Jones 'Could Fit in Anywhere' His Coach Says
Rumors of four-star wide receiver Hezekiah Jones’ talent have not been exaggerated.
At least not according to Ron Counter, the head coach at Stafford (Texas) where Jones is a senior.
When Counter first took the job at Stafford, he heard rumblings about Jones, but said he’d been coaching long enough at that point to know that rumors about high schoolers are often hyperbolic.
Then Counter saw Jones for himself, and those rumors were immediately confirmed.
“I knew some people that knew him and the word on the street was that he was really fast and was going to be a freshman in high school,” Counter said. "Sometimes people exaggerate about a kid’s athletic ability and you hear things about how fast a kid is and they end up not being that fast. As soon as I saw him run on the freshman team, I said ‘this kid is one of the fastest freshman.’ He’s just extremely fast.”
And it’s not just the speed. Counter said that Jones has been a weight room warrior in the past few years, and has put on a considerable amount of bulk.
“He’s spent a lot of time in the weigth room,” Counter said. “He’s got a fantastic work ethic.”
Jones, the No.17 receiver in the class of 2017, stands at 5-foot-11 and weighs 193 pounds.
A one-time Baylor commit, Jones backed off his pledge to the Bears on May 28 and committed to Texas A&M two months later.
However, Jones’ interest in Notre Dame didn’t fade with the commitment.
“You can’t count them out,” Jones said of the Irish, just a few days before taking his official visit to Notre Dame for the Michigan State game on Sept. 17.
According to Counter the visit went well, but Jones isn’t giving too much away as far as what he’s thinking.
“As far as I know, it went well,” Counter said. “I gave up trying to figure out 17-year olds a long time ago. I don’t even attempt to figure out what a 17-year old is thinking so,I have no idea whether he’s going to stay with his A&M commitment or go somewhere else. I'm clueless."
But Counter does know one thing; Wherever Jones ends up, he’ll shine.
“He could fit in anywhere,” Counter said. “It’s just a matter of picking the school that’s right for him; education, what he wants to major in, and how comfortable he feels with the coaching staff. Wherever he goes, he’s going to be fine.”
