Greer Martini showed up to Echoes with a new haircut and as a freshly-minted Notre Dame team captain.

The rising senior is looking to set the tone for a crucial offseason for the Irish.

“It’s creating a culture and standing by that culture,” Martini said. “We can’t have different cultures in the locker room, we have to set a dominating culture and we’re going to turn things around.”

Notre Dame is coming off a disappointing 4-8 season. After being ranked in the top-10 in the preseason, the Irish lost seven games by eight points or less and never exhibited an ability to close out games.

A season like that has motivated the Irish moving into 2017.

“We’re hungry and definitely not happy having a season like that,” Martini said. “Everyone is ready to go and we’re ready to put in that work that we need to be that dominating team.

“We have aspirations to go 12-0, that’s the only thing we can think about right now is working toward that next game and next opportunity to prove ourselves.”

Martini received the team’s “Next Man In” award, a fitting honor for a player that started just four games and finished with 55 tackles. He added seven tackles for loss, three sacks and a pass breakup, getting most of his playing time against Texas, Navy and Army.

A valuable resource against option offenses, Martini had 11 tackles against Navy and nine against Army.

Martini was asked if the Irish had different cultures in the locker room this past season. The rising senior dismissed that notion, choosing to look ahead.

“I don’t think it was anything this past season, it’s just moving forward this is how it has to be,” Martini said.
