Golson wins starting job

Everett Golson has won the starting job at Notre Dame for a second time.
Head coach Brian Kelly announced Wednesday that the senior had beaten out sophomore Malik Zaire to start against Rice on Aug. 30, a predictable conclusion to a battle that finished sooner than expected.

Just last weekend Kelly insisted the Golson-Zaire dynamic needed this week to play out. Instead, it had wrapped by Tuesday.
Kelly informed the coaching staff of his decision last night, then informed the quarterbacks of the call this morning, starting with Zaire before moving on to Golson.
"Everett is the starter for Rice and we hope he's the starter for the entire year," Kelly said. "We're all in this in a merit-based kind of situation. We've gotta win. Everett knows that."
Kelly added that he doesn't plan to run a two-quarterback system this season and that Zaire's reps would be limited to end-of-game situations or injury.
