Stone Mountain (Ga.) Stephenson cornerback Justin Birdsong may be a new name to watch moving forward.

Defensive backs coach Todd Lyght reached out to the junior on Thursday for the first time, but the 5-foot-11, 175-pounder had been hearing from the support staff for a couple of days before.

“Coach Lyght said all of the coaches love me, they love my play style and my enthusiasm on the field,” Birdsong said. “He said they will keep in heavy contact until I'm able to visit April 22 for the spring game.

“They are definitely a school I would want to continue in recruiting me and hearing from. Mainly because I've been looking at Notre Dame for a very long time.”

Birdsong will get a more in-depth look at Notre Dame for the Blue-Gold game later this spring.

“I'm hoping the coaches are very engaged in me and also I'm really hoping they pull the trigger and offer me,” Birdsong said. “I'm hoping to see a great game and looking to see both sides of the ball compete and just have fun on the field and also see the coaches have fun while coaching.”

If the staff ultimately does offer Birdsong, the Irish would shoot toward the top of his list.

“They would definitely be a team that I consider and show high interest in and also take many visits too,” Birdsong stated. “They would be a team to place in my top three no matter who comes into the picture.

“A lot interests me about Notre Dame. You know in their long and amazing history and also their championships in the past. I like the fact that they are a winning team and I wouldn't want to play for anything less than a team that wants to go out and win games. I'm a competitor at heart and have always been.”

Recruiting is still in the early stages for Birdsong. He offer list includes Navy, Appalachian State, Central Michigan and Howard.

“According to rankings I'm not the number one guy in the country, but I know personally in my heart that I am but also very underrated,” Birdsong said. “I feel that the school that gets me is going to be getting a steal and many other schools will regret not recruiting.

“I'm very confident in my abilities, but I'm not cocky at all. I feel that I'm very humble, but playing defensive back you have to have a high level of confidence to play. As a player I always feel that I am the best guy no matter what the occasion, but I do give respect where it is due. Lastly, I feel like I'm the guy that Notre Dame is looking for."

Birdsong has made trips to Tennessee, Western Kentucky, Middle Tennessee, Georgia Southern and Georgia State so far. He is also hoping to make it to Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech, Central Michigan and Appalachian State, among others.

Birdsong recorded 81 total tackles, two interceptions and eight pass breakups this past season as a junior.
