Four-Star DL Hunter Spears Commits To Notre Dame

Notre Dame's Jan. 27 Junior Day has yielded its second big commitment today as four-star Sachse (Texas) High defensive end Hunter Spears announced his pledge to the Irish.

Spears, the No. 17 weakside defensive end in the class of 2019, recently announced his intention to make a commitment on Sept. 15, his 18th birthday, but the appeal of the Irish was too good to wait for.

Spears picked Notre Dame over an unofficial top group of Texas Tech, TCU, Alabama and Oklahoma. He also received offers from Oklahoma State, Baylor, California, Virginia and Michigan State, among many others.

The commitment of Spears gives Notre Dame its fourth member of the 2019 class, and second defensive lineman along with four-star defensive tackle Jacob Lacey.

The Junior Day visit was Spears' second visit to Notre Dame, his first coming on Oct. 21 for the Irish's 49-14 win over USC.

Spears has talked often throughout his recruitment about his great relationship with defensive line coach Mike Elston, which obviously ended up paying dividends for the Irish.

Notre Dame needs a strong defensive line haul in 2019, and landing Spears and Lacey puts the Irish program in great shape to make that happen.
