Avonta Crim has been waiting a long time to visit Notre Dame.

Crim, a three-star safety from Ocala (Fla.) Vanguard, was scheduled to visit South Bend for the Georgia game Sept. 9, but had to reschedule due to Hurricane Irma.

The Sunshine State talent will make the trip north this weekend to see the Irish take on USC, and couldn’t be more excited.

“It’s pretty big,” Crim said. “I’ve been waiting for so long, it's good to finally be able to come up and see how everything is going.”

Official visits anywhere are important, but Crim’s trip to South Bend is especially big because he believes he’ll be leaving town with an offer from the Irish.

“I’m trying to get this offer from Notre Dame and they told me once I get up there I should be able to get the offer,” he said. “That would be big for me and my family.”

According to Crim, the Notre Dame coaching staff has told him they want him to get a closer look at campus before extending a tender.

“They basically want me to come up there and see the campus and all they have to offer,” Crim said. “So in case they offer me, I won’t commit without ever having seen the campus and stuff like that.”

Should the Irish end up offering, they would be in very good position to eventually land Crim.

The Vanguard standout said Notre Dame would move up his list quickly if the tender comes.

“That would be huge for me academically,” Crim said. “That would probably stand out as my biggest offer, so that would be huge.”

Defensive coordinator Mike Elko has been running point for Notre Dame on Crim’s recruitment. According to Crim, the two are talking at least once a week and he has been impressed with everything Elko has shown him so far.

“He’s a good coach,” Crim said. “I like the way he coaches and how he uses safeties. I like the play calls he makes … he’s just big all around.”

While the Irish have been recruiting him, Crim has done some research into the program, and said he’s liked what he’s seen so far.

“I really know Notre Dame for their academics,” Crim said. “They’ve always had a nice football team and the tradition there is very big. I like the way they play together as brothers. It’s like a big family there. It’s a bond.”
