Duke Beats Notre Dame, 38-35

FIRST QUARTER: Notre Dame 14, Duke 14

Top Moment: After surging to a 14-0 lead, Duke’s Shaun Wilson returned the ensuing kickoff for a 96-yard touchdown, giving the Blue Devils the momentum for the rest of the quarter.

Stats: Notre Dame’s opening touchdown drive covered 75 yards on eight plays in 2:53. It was the eighth Notre Dame scoring drive of at least 75 yards thus far in 2016, and the third such scoring campaign in under three minutes of elapsed time of possession.

Items: Notre Dame junior quarterback DeShone Kizer had two touchdowns to open the game, running for an 8-yard score and finding freshman receiver Kevin Stepherson for a 44-yard TD. Duke also added its second touchdown on an 18-yard run by running back Jela Duncan. Malik Zaire was officially credited with a start at WR after taking the field during Notre Dame’s opening drive.

SECOND QUARTER: Duke 28, Notre Dame 21

Top Moment: Duke’s Anthony Nash beat Cole Luke for a 32-yard touchdown, giving the Blue Devils a 28-21 lead with 1:22 left in the first half.

Stats: Though the Irish were outgaining the Blue Devils at halftime, Duke’s 92-55 advantage on the ground proved crucial. Redshirt-freshman quarterback Daniel Jones completed 13 of 15 passes for 147 yards and two touchdowns. His counterpart Kizer was 14-for-22 passing for 233 yards and one touchdown. Josh Adams ran for just 24 yards on seven carries, with a long of five yards.

Items: Sophomore running back Dexter Williams picked up his second touchdown of the season with a 13-yard rush that capped a nine-play, 72-yard drive in the second quarter, which snapped a 21-0 Duke run.

THIRD QUARTER: Notre Dame 28, Duke 28

Top Moment: Adams took a handoff off tackle right and scored a 9-yard touchdown to tie the game at 28-28 with 4:54 left in the quarter.

Stats: Through three quarters, Duke had amassed 319 total yards (183 passing, 136 rushing). Notre Dame had 445 yards, almost all by Kizer through the air. He was 18 for 29 passing for 324 yards and a touchdown. On the ground, the Irish had just 121 yards.

Items: Freshman cornerback Donte Vaughn came up with a key interception on a third-and-four pass by Jones into the end zone. Equanimeous St. Brown went over 100 yards receiving, the first time in his career he’s done that. Kizer was nearly intercepted by Breon Borders, but the ball was dropped. It’s the second straight game Kizer has gone over 300 yards passing.

FOURTH QUARTER: Duke 38, Notre Dame 35

Top Moment: Duke's AJ Reed hit a 19-yard field goal with 1:27 remaining to take a 38-35 lead.

Stats: Duke finished with 498 yards of offense to Notre Dame's 534. Duke was 6-of-14 on third downs. Each team ran 74 plays. The Blue Devils ran for 208 yards on 42 carries while passing for 290 yards. Duke rushed for a 154 yards against Wake Forest and Northwestern in its two losses this year.

Items: St. Brown’s fourth quarter touchdown now gives him a scoring reception in each game this season and five total. Kizer finished 22 for 37 for 381 yards and two touchdowns, a career-high passing yards. He also threw a bad fourth quarter interception. Duke's Daniel Jones went 24 for 32 for 290 yards and three touchdowns.
