Day plans to return
Notre Dame got Sheldon Day back for the Music City Bowl on Tuesday.
It will get the captain back next season too barring a late change from the defensive tackle, who returned for the postseason against LSU from an MCL sprain suffered in mid-November.
A source told Irish Illustrated that Day received a “stay in school” grade from the NFL Draft Advisory Board and plans to follow that advice. It’s unclear when or if Day will announce his decision. The junior has said repeatedly that he wouldn’t make his draft choice until after the bowl game.
With Day back, Notre Dame’s defense is in line to return 10 starters, not including suspended cornerback KeiVarae Russell and defensive end Ishaq Williams.
Day finished the regular season with just 38 tackles, but 7.5 of those went for loss. That figure matched Jarron Jones in the category and trailed team leader Jaylon Smith by just one. Day also tied for the team lead with nine quarterback hurries.
Day was one of four players to ask for draft grades along with Ronnie Stanley, Everett Golson and Nick Martin. Martin has already said he plans to return for his senior season. The future for Golson and Stanley is less clear, with the offensive tackle projected as a first round pick in multiple mock drafts.
